LAKE ELEMENTAITA

A NATURAL WONDER AND HISTORICAL GEM

Nestled within the breathtaking landscapes of Kenya, Lake Elementaita unveils a rich tapestry of natural wonders and historical significance. Explore its timeless allure through a journey that spans ancient archaeological sites, diverse wildlife, and a vital role in global bird conservation.

History Unearthed:

The Lake Elementaita basin holds a treasure trove of history dating back 700,000 years to the Oldowan period. Stone tools discovered at Kariandusi offer a glimpse into our ancient past. The Eburru Mountains reveal evidence of Obsidian trade dating over 3000 years, showcasing the region’s historical significance. Later, the Maasai pastoral community, during colonial times, named it “Elementaita,” and the area witnessed ranching by Lord Delamere.

A Haven for Biodiversity:

Lake Elementaita is not just a body of water; it’s a haven for biodiversity. Designated an Important Bird Area (IBA) in 1999, it boasts globally significant populations of Greater and Lesser Flamingo, Great White Pelican, African Spoonbill, and Pied Avocet. The lake was rightfully declared a Ramsar site in 2005 and gained further recognition as a National Wildlife Sanctuary in 2010. UNESCO honored it as part of the Kenya Lakes System in the Great Rift Valley World Heritage Site in 2011.

Wildlife Sanctuary

The terrestrial habitats surrounding the lake are home to a diverse array of wildlife, including the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, Elands, Buffaloes, Common Zebras, Impalas, Reedbuck, bushbuck, and Colobus monkeys. Soysambu Conservancy, part of Lake Elementaita, hosts an abundance of carnivores such as Lions, Leopards, hyenas, and jackals. The unique Kenyan Horned Viper (Bitis worthingtonii) also finds its habitat here.

Birding Paradise

Lake Elementaita boasts one of the world’s major breeding colonies of the Great White Pelican, making it the exclusive breeding ground for these majestic birds in Kenya. Witness up to 8,000 pairs of pelicans during peak breeding seasons when the water levels create safe nesting islets on the rocky outcrops.

Natural Hot Springs

Adding to its allure, Lake Elementaita features permanent hot water springs, acting as a breeding area for tilapia, a delicacy for the resident pelicans.
