A Conservation Odyssey in Kenya

In the lush grasslands of East Africa, where the beauty of nature intertwines with a profound commitment to conservation, the Africa Fund for Endangered Wildlife (A.F.E.W.) Kenya welcomes you to the Giraffe Centre. Established in 1979 by the late Jock Leslie-Melville and his wife, Betty Leslie-Melville, this haven is not merely a sanctuary for the endangered Rothschild Giraffe but a living testament to the power of human dedication to wildlife preservation.

Discovering the Sad Plight

The Giraffe Centre’s story began when Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville discovered the heartbreaking plight of the Rothschild Giraffe, a subspecies unique to the grasslands of East Africa. Witnessing the dwindling numbers and loss of habitat, they decided to take action. In 1979, the couple founded A.F.E.W. Kenya and embarked on a mission that would redefine the landscape of giraffe conservation.

From Home to Sanctuary

The first chapter of their endeavor unfolded as they brought two young giraffes, Daisy and Marlon, to their home in the Lang’ata suburb, southwest of Nairobi. Here, under their watchful care, the calves thrived, and the foundations of a captive breeding program were laid. This humble beginning marked the birth of the Giraffe Centre, a sanctuary that remains a beacon of hope for the Rothschild Giraffe to this day.

Protecting the Subspecies

Realizing the urgency of the situation, Betty and Jock registered A.F.E.W. in the United States. The aim was clear: protect the Rothschild Giraffe from the imminent threat of habitat loss. Through fundraising efforts, they orchestrated the relocation of five groups of giraffes to different safe areas. These efforts included translocating breeding herds to the Ruma Game Reserve, Lake Nakuru National Park, Nasolot Game Reserve, and Yodder Flower Farm. The vision was not only to save the giraffes but also to create a sustainable breeding program.

Educational Centre

In 1983, A.F.E.W. USA played a pivotal role in building the Educational Centre, a testament to the Leslie-Melvilles’ extraordinary vision. This 60-acre sanctuary aimed not only to rescue giraffes but also to educate and inspire. The Giraffe Centre opened its doors to the public and students, marking the beginning of an educational journey that would impact the lives of over 800 students in the first year alone.

Conservation in Action

Fast forward to the present, and the Giraffe Centre stands as a thriving hub of conservation. Over 300 Rothschild Giraffes now roam safely in various Kenyan national parks, a testament to the success of the breeding program initiated by Betty and Jock Leslie-Melville. Recent herds have found new homes in Soysambu Ranch by Lake Elementaita, Kigio Conservancy, and the Sergoit Ranch in the Mount Elgon region, ensuring the subspecies’ survival and flourishing.

Interactive Conservation Experience

As a visitor to the Giraffe Centre, you are not merely an observer; you become an active participant in the conservation narrative. The experience unfolds with an opportunity to witness the grace and elegance of the Rothschild Giraffe up close. Engage in interactive encounters as you feed and interact with them, fostering a connection that transcends the boundaries between species.

Supporting Conservation

Your visit to the Giraffe Centre is more than a personal experience; it is a direct contribution to the ongoing conservation efforts. The funds generated from tourism play a crucial role in sustaining the sanctuary, supporting the care, feeding, and medical needs of the resident giraffes, and facilitating educational initiatives.

Conservation Challenges and Triumphs:

As with any conservation journey, challenges persist. The Giraffe Centre remains dedicated to addressing these challenges, from ongoing habitat preservation to community engagement and sustainable practices. The triumphs, however, echo in the success stories of giraffes released into protected areas and the continuous impact on future generations.

Immerse Yourself in Giraffe Conservation

Whether you are an avid wildlife enthusiast, a family seeking an educational adventure, or a global citizen passionate about conservation, the Giraffe Centre invites you to immerse yourself in a journey of wonder and impact. From the tranquility of observing giraffes in their natural habitat to the joy of contributing to their well-being, every moment spent at the Giraffe Centre is an investment in the future of a species and the planet.
