OL PEJETA CONSERVANCY

Guardians of the Wild – Rhinos & Ol Pejeta’s Majestic Horizons

Nestled between the foothills of Mount Kenya and the Aberdares, Ol Pejeta Conservancy stands as a testament to Kenya’s commitment to wildlife conservation. Spanning a vast 364 square kilometers, this wildlife conservancy boasts a remarkable game-to-area ratio that tops the charts among Kenyan parks and reserves.

Wildlife Extravaganza: Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, hosting over 10,000 large mammals. It is the only park where the Big Five—lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros—coexist harmoniously with chimpanzees. The conservancy is renowned for its role in protecting and nurturing rhino populations, including the critically endangered northern white rhino, with only two of its kind left in the world.

Diverse Ownership History: Established in 1988, Ol Pejeta has a rich history, changing hands from influential figures like Lord Delamere and shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis’ father, Roussel. Originally conceived as a cattle ranch, the encroachment of migrating elephants led to a shift in focus. Today, Ol Pejeta seamlessly integrates managed livestock within the conservancy, contributing to its biodiversity.

Educational Initiatives: Ol Pejeta is not just a wildlife haven; it’s a center for education and conservation. The Environmental and Conservation Centre welcomes around 100 Kenyan schools annually, focusing on teaching ecology, culture, and the importance of sustainable wildlife management. Visitors can immerse themselves in local culture, interacting with the Samburu, Turkana, Pokot, and Maasai communities.

Unique Activities at Ol Pejeta Conservancy:

    1. Endangered Species Boma: The Endangered Species Boma offers a unique opportunity to witness the last two northern white rhinos in the world. With about 80 endangered black rhinos, six southern white rhinos, and various Grevy’s zebras and Jackson’s hartebeests, this experience is a must-see.

    1. Baraka the Black Rhino: Meet Baraka, the blind black rhino and ambassador for his species. Visitors can view and feed him, gaining insight into the challenges faced by these majestic creatures.

    1. Chimpanzee Sanctuary: Established in 1993, the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary provides a refuge for orphaned and confiscated chimpanzees. Accessible by boat, it’s the only place in Kenya where non-indigenous chimpanzees can be seen.

    1. Lion Tracking: Embark on a unique opportunity to track the lion population within Ol Pejeta Conservancy. A fascinating way to support conservation efforts and learn more about these majestic animals.

    1. Junior Ranger Program: Enroll your young ones in the Junior Ranger Program, a delightful experience for children aged 4 to 12. It encourages them to discover and develop a love for nature through engaging exercises across Ol Pejeta.

    1. Morani Information Centre: Explore the Morani Information Centre to learn about the diverse wildlife species within Ol Pejeta. Gain insights into the conservancy’s daily efforts to safeguard wildlife and preserve wilderness.

    1. Riding with Rhinos: Experience the thrill of riding through the 600-acre Endangered Species Enclosure, home to the last three remaining northern white rhinos on the planet. This activity, available to experienced riders, offers encounters with Grevy’s zebras, Jackson’s hartebeests, and more.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy, with its commitment to conservation, unique wildlife, and engaging activities, promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of Kenya’s natural wonders.
